DETROIT – A drunk driver was arrested Wednesday after crashing a pickup truck into a utility pole near a Southwest Detroit playground and walking away from the scene, police said.
The 60-year-old man is accused of holding a 40-ounce beer when he crashed into the pole. He was also driving without a license, police said.
The crash happened at Edward Street and Martin Road in Southwest Detroit. Police said the man lost control of the pickup, and the truck rolled into a utility pole.
Police said several 40-ounce beers came tumbling out of the truck.
Officials said the man was so drunk he could hardly walk. When they showed up, he had left the crash scene, but police quickly found him staggering through an alley, they said.
There were several children in the neighborhood playing at the time of the incident, police said. The children witnessed the crash and ran for cover.
