Stories about filthy living conditions emerge from condemned Royal Oak Township motel

Royal Inn closing due to ordinance violations

ROYAL OAK TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Horror stories are emerging about the Royal Inn in Royal Oak Township after the motel was condemned Thursday.

The nearly 300 people who live in the motel will need to be out by Sept. 6.

"They are awful. They have lots of bedbugs, a lot of leaks. People were complaining inside their rooms," Dartisha Williams, who has lived in the motel since May 31, said.

The building's list of violations leading to its closure includes 17 fire code and 33 building code violations.

"There are children with mattresses in the closet. What I've seen today is just unbelievable and really does pull at your heartstring," Royal Oak Township supervisor Donna Squalls said.

Squalls said the motel has fleas, ticks, mice, cockroaches, rats and bedbugs.

Despite the condition of the motel, some residents don't think it's that bad.

"Everything has been taken care of. i don't know why they're knocking it so bad. It's not that bad here," Learnard Durecki said.

Many residents who are forced to leave don't have anywhere to go. They will be provided with help relocation, food and health screenings Friday.
