CHELSEA, Mich. – A 52-year-old woman was killed Monday in a crash caused by a driver who was fleeing police in a stolen car, Michigan State Police said.
Officials said a Michigan State Police motor carrier officer was investigating a stolen Chrysler 300 on eastbound I-94 near Clear Lake Road at the Jackson-Washtenaw County line when the stolen car exited from I-94 to northbound M-52.
The officer activated his emergency lights, and the Chrysler 300 began to pull over to the shoulder, but then sped off.
Police said the officer followed the stolen car for a short distance before the driver crashed into a Chevrolet Traverse while exiting the Country Market parking lot. The 52-year-old woman driving the Traverse was killed in the crash.
A trooper from the MSP Brighton Post arrived on scene for backup, and the 34-year-old man driving the stolen car was taken into custody. He is being treated for injuries.
Police said criminal charges are pending.
The crash is still being investigated. Anyone with information is asked to call MSP Fifth District Headquarters at 269-657-6081.
