88-year-old woman saved from Detroit house fire by neighbor

69-year-old man died in fire

DETROIT – A man saved an 88-year-old woman from a fire Saturday on Detroit's west side.

Original report: 1 dead after 2 Detroit homes catch fire on city's west side

The home the woman shared with her brother in the 12000 block of Cherrylawn Street caught fire about 10:30 a.m. Her 69-year-old brother, Lorenzo Hunter Jr., was killed in the fire.

A man who lives nearby, Mark Hansen, saw the fire from his car and stopped to help. He was able to get the woman, but he said the fire was too heavy for him to rescue the man.

"It was just too smokey and [there were] too many flames," Hansen said.

Hunter's niece, Christina Jones, is thankful that Hansen was at least able to rescue one of the victims.

"I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, from all of my family," she said.
