SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Shelby Township police said a woman who walked away from her home Wednesday night has been found dead.
Police said the 65-year-old woman walked away from home wearing a T-shirt, jeans and slippers. Police believe the woman left the home after going to bed at 9 p.m. Her husband noticed she was gone at 6 a.m. Thursday.
Police said she suffered from mental illness including dementia, and she had wandered away from home in the past.
Shelby Township police were searching the area of 25 Mile and Shelby roads on Thursday morning.
"We immediately, because of the weather, we started investigating and had all of our patrol officers looking for her," said Clinton Township Police Lt. Pat Barnard.
Officers found the woman dead on the Macomb-Orchard bike path near 24 Mile and Dequindre roads.
Police said she succumbed to the cold weather.
