Police search for driver after boy, 8, killed in hit-and-run in Southwest Detroit

Boy struck while crossing street, police say

DETROIT – An 8-year-old boy was killed Thursday afternoon in a hit-and-run in Southwest Detroit, police said.

UPDATE: Man arrested in Ecorse in connection with Southwest Detroit hit-and-run that killed 8-year-old 

Police said the boy was crossing Fort Street near Miami street about 5 p.m. when he was hit by a green 1999 or 2000 model year Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a black male. 

The boy was pulling his red wagon just a few blocks from his home while heading to a park. Police said his parents were looking for him when he got hit. 

As he tried to cross the street during rush hour, drivers slowed down, but one kept going, hitting the boy.

He was dragged about 100 feet from where he was hit, police said, while the sped away from the scene. Police said there is no way the man didn't know he hit the child, and witnesses said they saw the driver zig-zag through traffic to get away.

Police said they are searching for the driver and vehicle involved in the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the fourth precinct at 313-596-5400.
