LAPEER, Mich. – Four Lapeer students were taken to the hospital Wednesday after having a negative reaction to a vape pen substance, school officials said.

The students were taken from the Zemmer Middle School campus to a nearby hospital for treatment and further monitoring, officials from the school district said.

Officials said the students are in stable condition.

The parents have been notified, officials said.

A fifth student from another school has reported being sick and might also be connected to this case, officials said. The five students all came from a program at a different school.

School district officials have the canister believed to have sickened the students, but they haven't identified the substance, yet.

Authorities said they still don't know what the substance was, but it is currently being evaluated by medical staff workers.
