High winds could mean no balloons in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York

City rules limit balloon flying

NEW YORK CITY, NY – Some of your favorite pop culture characters may not be floating through New York City this year due to predicted high winds.

New York City rules state balloons can’t fly in sustained winds that exceed 23 miles per hour or wind gusts over 34 miles per hour.

As of now, the forecast predicts wind speeds that exceed the limit.

This rule was instated in 1997 when strong winds took down the Cat in the Hat balloon, injuring four people.
