28 shots fired into home with 8 children on Detroit's east side

Nobody injured in drive-by shooting

DETROIT – A house on Detroit's east side was targeted by shooters while eight children were inside being babysat by their grandmother.

The shooting happened after 11 p.m. Wednesday on Grayton Street near Outer Drive and Cadieux Road.

"Gunshots flying through the house," grandmother Sherry Whitman said. "I end up falling down the steps."

Whitman is still shaken by the shooting. She was watching her eight grandchildren -- ages 2 weeks to 10 years old -- on the hot night, and the children were playing on the porch.

Two cars rolled up on Grayton Street near Warren Avenue, and people inside both cars started firing shots, police said.

Whitman's daughter hit the ground outside, screaming at the shooters.

There were 28 shots fired, right above where the children were playing on the porch.

There were also four adults in the home. Police said it's remarkable nobody was shot.

"I don't know what was going on," Whitman said. "We don't bother anybody. I don't know who the target was."
