89-year-old nun from Monroe doesn't let age stop her from running, racing

Beth Wood runs every day

MONROE, Mich. – An 89-year-old Catholic nun from Monroe doesn't let her age get in the way of running.

Sister Beth Wood was training to participate in a 5K race Sunday, though she has completed nearly 30 half-marathons.

A marathon is 26.2 miles. Wood can run a half-marathon in about five hours and a 5K in about 40 minutes.

"I'm not a real athlete," she said. "I don't get ready every day. I just get ready when there's a race coming on."

Wood runs every day around her convent, the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She said she started running when she was in her mid-50s.

"I hope I can run into my 90s because that would be very nice," she said.
