Air Force military policeman killed in shooting on Detroit's east side

Police arrest 19-year-old; 1 other hurt

DETROIT – Detroit police say they've arrested a 19-year-old man who is accused of killing his stepfather, an active-duty Air Force sergeant.

Detroit police spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody said the 19-year-old allegedly shot his soon-to-be stepfather, Johnny Clyburn, Tuesday morning on Woodhall Street.

"He's big, he's handsome, he's good, he's everything. That was my baby. If I needed him, no matter where he was, he was there," said Clyburn's mother, Brenda.

A stray bullet also hit the suspect's mother, Nikki Pace. She is in critical condition.

The suspect was taken into custody after fleeing from police for more than an hour. Woody said the suspect has a history of mental illness.

Clyburn, a 21-year Air Force veteran, was a member of the 127th Security Forces Squadron at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
