FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The family of an Indiana high school basketball standout who suffered a serious head injury in a Michigan plane crash that killed his father and stepmother says he likely won't return to the court this season.

The statement issued Wednesday by Austin Hatch's family through Fort Wayne's Canterbury High School says he is continuing to make great strides in his rehabilitation, but that the first year is vital to the recovery process and it is unlikely that his doctors will clear him to play during his junior season.

Hatch had committed in June to play basketball at the University of Michigan starting in 2013.

The statement says that Hatch will be at Canterbury's games this season, but asks the news media to respect his privacy and not ask for interviews.
