How to stop hitting the snooze button

By Juliette, Pure Matters

I laud myself for being one of the world's best sleepers. Even despite noisy neighbors blasting "Call Me Maybe" on repeat or a rock-solid hotel bed, I can still pretty much fall asleep anywhere within a few minutes and stay asleep.

But getting up? That's a different story.

I am the queen of hitting the snooze button. Multiple times. Even if I get my recommended 7-8 hours of sleep. It drives my boyfriend crazy, it doesn't actually give me any more true rest time, it probably makes me more tired throughout the day, and it cuts out valuable time in my mornings. Yet without fail, I continue to snooze my iPhone alarm with the half-asleep determination to spring out of bed and start my day. Just give me five more minutes.

That is, until now. One of my new year's resolutions is to take back my mornings, and with that comes the understanding that if I snooze, I lose. So for the past several days, I've been making every effort to get up and at ‘em on the first try. Here are some tips that finally helped me to stop hitting the snooze button:

Plan for tomorrow the night before. If I have my lunch and gym bag packed, my work outfit decided on and a rough agenda of the next day planned out before bedtime, I find that I feel more prepared and relaxed. This also actually ironically makes me less likely to snooze–I know I won't have to rush in the morning but I also look forward to having the morning to cook a healthy breakfast and read for a little bit before my day starts.

Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. This was a tough one for me, but by going to bed a little bit earlier each night and waking up a little bit earlier each day, I'm finding that my body is resetting its own inner body clock, which make my mornings all the more easy.

Move your phone or alarm clock to the other side of the room. I used to sleep with my phone practically under the pillow. By moving it to a place in my bedroom that I can't reach, it forces me to stumble out of my comfy bed to turn the damn thing off. And after all that effort, what's the use in going back to bed?

Take a moment to meditate with a positive affirmation. After hitting the first (and final) snooze button, I now take a minute to open my eyes, take some deep breaths and put out some positive energy into the world. By telling myself I'm going to have the most fantastic day ever, I get so amped to spread the happy vibes that snoozing for another 10 minutes doesn't even become an option.
