Boy killed in hit-and-run in Detroit; police search for driver, vehicle

8-year-old boy dies after vehicle strikes him on his bike near W. Chicago Street, Abington Avenue

DETROIT – An 8-year-old boy was hit and killed by a vehicle Tuesday night while he was riding his bike near West Chicago Street and Abington Avenue on Detroit's west side.

The vehicle did not stop and Detroit police are currently searching for it and the driver.

"He dragged the child a block and continued on, never stopped, never slowed down ... and drug the bike of the child another mile before it dislodged from the car," said Detroit Police Commander Steve Dolunt.

Investigators are looking at a late 90s red Ford Explorer as possibly being connected to the incident. It has been impounded.

"It has beige stripes on the side. Old faded paint. The muffler is hanging from the rear," said Dolunt.

Witnesses say it traveled north on Stout Street at a high rate of speed.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything is asked to call Detroit police at 313-596-2260.
