Call comes for Sterling Heights councilman to resign

2009 Tea Party rally shows Paul Smith with controversial signs; Council votes in favor of his resignation

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. - A video recorded from 2009 has come back to haunt Sterling Heights City Councilman Paul Smith.

That video prompted the City Council Wednesday night to vote 6-1 for his resignation. Smith was the only one to vote against it.

The video of a rally, which has now gone viral, shows Smith holding signs with images of President Barack Obama with a spear through his skull and an image of former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm width a noose around her neck.

Smith was outspoken when he talked with Local 4 this week.

"Hitler was a terrible guy but at least he wasn't a traitor to Germany. Obama is a traitor to America," Smith said.

The video also showed inappropriate words on the signs held by Smith that singled out illegal immigrants and members of the gay and lesbian community.

Smith remains on City Council for now. But if he doesn't step down, the next step would be a recall effort.

Police are reviewing the video.
