Police say Elbers was in the process of trying up his ex-girlfriend in the basement of her family's home when police arrived. Elbers struggled with police, broke free, and ran off.

Police said a gun and duct tape found in Elbers' truck suggested he had plans to kill his ex-girlfriend.

After fleeing from police, investigators say Elbers broke into a home while the owners were away.  When homeowner Bill Dod and his wife returned, Dod saw a door that had been broken and heard the intruder running away.

"I was coming through the kitchen hollering if I get my hands on you, you'll pay for this," Dod said.

Bill Dod also found evidence that the intruder has spent some time in the bathroom.

"He washed up. There was a bloody washcloth and a towel," Dod said.
