DETROIT – The city of Detroit announced earlier this year that it would resume yard waste collection on April 17, and officials said that is still ongoing.

Information on yard waste collection
On Monday, April 17, the City of Detroit Department of Public Works will resume curbside yard waste collection. The collection of yard waste will occur on the same day as a household’s scheduled bi-weekly bulk day and continue through December 15.
Residents can place grass clippings, leaves, and small twigs in biodegradable paper bags on their designated day every other week. If yard waste is desired to be disposed of immediately, residents may take their yard waste to any of the convenient DPW free drop-off locations.
All yard waste must be placed at the curb at least six feet from the Courville container in biodegradable paper bags or a personal garbage can. The City’s contractors, Advanced Disposal and GFL Environmental, will not collect yard waste in plastic bags. Branches and twigs less than two inches in diameter should be cut down and placed in biodegradable bags. Branches and twigs, up to 4 feet in length and no more than 4 inches in diameter, should be bundled and tied securely. Bundles should not weigh more than 60 pounds.
Yard waste collection season extended
The City also is announcing that starting this year, its collection of yard waste will extend until the second week of December. In the past, the city stopped collecting yard waste at the end of November. After listening to feedback from residents, however, DPW officials decided to extend collection to allow residents more time for them to rake and bag their leaves.
It is important to note, residents who leave their yard waste at the curb more than 24 hours before their scheduled pickup could be ticketed.
Hours for drop-off locations change
In addition, DPW will switch to its spring/summer hours of 10:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. at its drop-off locations, beginning Monday, April 17 and will end Friday, December 15. The State Fair Yard and Anthon locations will be closing effective June 1st. Residents with proper City of Detroit identification may use the drop-off locations to discard bulk items, yard waste and recyclable items.
