Colorado group aims to ban cell phone sales to kids under 13

DENVER – If an advocacy group in Colorado has it's way, voters in the state will decide whether selling cell phones to kids under the age of 13 would be illegal.

Parents Against Underage Smartphones is currently collecting signatures in an effort to get a measure on the 2018 ballot.

The proposal would forbid the sale of smartphones to anyone under the age of 13 or to anyone who is buying the phone for someone under the age of 13.

Retailers would also have to verbally ask a customer the age of the person the phone would be for.

For a first offense, retailers that sell to someone underage would get a warning but would be fined for subsequent violations.

The full proposal can be read here.

Supporters need 300,000 signatures to get the measure on the ballot.
