DETROIT – A registered nurse in Detroit, alumni from Cooley High School and a food pantry teamed up Saturday to help homeless people stay warm as temperatures drop.
The school has been abandoned for years, but the meeting place was a class reunion of sorts for those who stopped by to assist with the event, Keeping Michigan Warm for Christmas.
The group, with the help of Labor of Love Food Pantry, distributed items such as hand- and toe-warmers to the homeless community in the city.
Each year, Stacey McCarthy sets up outside to help those in need.
"I can't walk right by. I can't see someone needs help and not do anything about it," she said.
McCarthy, a breast cancer survivor, said events like the warmth drive keep her going.
"I'm still just trying to keep going strong. I don't want to shrivel up and die. I want to just keep going, and these types of things keep me going," she said.
