HAZEL PARK, Mich. - A man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for killing a teenager he had arranged to meet over a Craigslist posting.
Alexander Lyons, 23, was convicted for the murder of Johnathan Clements.
Hazel Park police said 19-year-old Clements was planning to buy a cell phone on Feb. 15 from Lyons, whom he had met on Craigslist, but was instead robbed of $95 and shot in the torso.
Police said Clements was shot during the arranged meeting outside his home on the 23000 block of Crossley Avenue.
Clements lived with his aunt, Renee Bommarito, who said she found him just feet from the house crying out in pain. He later died from his injuries.
Lyons was charged with murder and possession of a fire arm. A second man, 19-year-old Lamar DeAngelo, was also charged with murder. Police said DeAngelo drove the getaway car for Lyons after he shot Clements.
Defense attorney Mitch Ribitwer had argues that the plan was never to purposely kill Clements.
?They never intended to rob or kill Mr. Clements. Mr. Lyons indicates that there was some argument over the money and he wanted his phone back,? Ribitwer said. ?In the struggle, the gun went off.?
