Multiple vehicles, trucks crash on southbound US-23 at Carpenter Road

1 person killed, 2 others transported to hospital

YORK TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The southbound lanes of US-23 at Carpenter Road have reopened after a crash involving several vehicles and semi trucks.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said the highway would be closed between Willis Road and Plank Road for several hours.

Twelve semi trucks and 15 cars were strewn across the highway. Two people had to be extracted from vehicles -- one from a vehicle and the other from a semi truck -- with the Jaws of Life.

Police said one person was pronounced dead at St. Joe's after the incident. They say everyone involved in the accident has been evacuated. The Huron Valley Ambulance transported two patients to the University of Michigan hospital, one in unstable condition and one in stable condition, according to authorities.

All northbound and southbound lanes of US-23 were open Friday night.

Everyone involved in the crash waited on a transit bus to get out of the freezing temperatures.

Milan and Pittsfield Township fire departments, along with Michigan State Police and Huron Valley Ambulance all responded to the crash.
