Dearborn Heights man pleads guilty to bribing Garden City officials

Bribes were to get authorization for medical marijuana dispensary, police say

DETROIT – In federal court Tuesday, a Dearborn Heights man pleaded guilty on charges of bribing officials from Garden City.

According to authorities, from September to December 2016, Ali Baydoun conspired with others to bribe officials in order to obtain authorization to open a medical marijuana dispensary in Garden City and a medical marijuana plant grow.

Information presented at the time of the plea showed that on Dec. 2, 2016, Baydoun, along with his co-defendants Mike Baydoun and Jalal Baydoun, delivered to a Garden City official an envelope containing $15,000 cash, representing three individual bribes in the amount of $5,000 each for three Garden City Council members. Unbehnownst to the Baydouns, the official was working in an undercover capacity. Additionally, Baydoun had placed $150,000 in an account as escrow to fund future bribes of officials.

A sentencing date was set for April 10, 2018. Ali Baydoun faces a statutory maximum penalty of five years in federal prison.
