Detroit apartments without water for days

Water back on at west Detroit apartment, but not before several dry days

DETROIT - Detroit Water and Sewerage officials say the water was shut off at a 32-unit west Detroit apartment complex in the 4200 block of Davison due to an illegal water hookup since February.

No one at the complex has had water since Thursday. City water workers were at the building Monday morning to turn the water back on.

It has a been tough for Teresa Overton who has MS.

"It's irritating. You can't cook right. You can't wash up. You can't do nothing," said Overton.

She blames the owner of the building.

"I am stuck here. I gave you my money. How am I supposed to just move. You haven't come to my door and apologized about nothing," she said.

Overton moved to the building in May. She says she has had problems since the beginning, such as a roach infestation. They crawl all over the place including inside her refrigerator.

"Everything has to be covered up," she said. "I can't even cook in here."

Overton has been down this road before. She moved from an apartment that was home to roaches and mice. She is tired of packing up.

"I'm fed up with Detroit. I am so tired of this housing in Detroit. It don't make no sense how you do us people. I have worked all my life. I can't work now. I worked for what I have it's not fair to me to have to live like this here," she said.

Local 4 spoke with the complex owner who said he has been providing tenants with bottled water. He says the water was shut off because there was a problem with an outside meter.

However, Detroit Water and Sewerage officials say it was shut off because the department wasn't receiving payments due to an illegal hookup, not a meter problem.

The payment issue was worked out on Monday and the water finally was turned back on. The owner is working on a payment plan with the department. All four buildings in the complex have water for now.
