Detroit Cody High School basketball coach killed in shooting

54-year-old Charles Knott found shot to death in his car in Detroit

DETROIT – Local 4 has learned a basketball coach at Detroit's Cody High School was shot and killed overnight in the city.

Cody High School Principal Jonathan Matthews said the school was notified Wednesday morning that 54-year-old Charles Knott had been killed in a shooting. He was sitting in his car in Detroit when he was shot in the back and killed.

He spent more than 20 years coaching the girls basketball team. Students and staff are taking the loss especially hard.

"One of the things about the violence is that when it happens at a school it affects young people, it affects alumni and it affects the community as a whole," said Matthews. "He's been with us for 20 years. He's part of the family, not just at Cody but of the Cody-Rouge community. He's going to be deeply missed."

Police are investigating. They believe the suspect was driving a black Jeep Cherokee.

Local 4 and ClickOnDetroit.com will report more information on Knott's death as soon as it is available.
