DETROIT - One year ago, 15-year-old Jada Rankin was at her grandmother's house on Ardmore Street in Detroit celebrating her brother's birthday.
When a car drove down the residential street going much too fast, partygoers called out for the driver to slow down. That's when the door of the car opened, and a man fired a shot into the crowd.
The shot hit Jada. She was dead by the time she arrived at a nearby hospital.
One year later, her killer still isn't in custody. Crime Stoppers is offering an $8,000 reward for information.
"I have all the hope in the world that the person who fired the shots will be found and justice will be served for Jada," said Tiawanna Cobb, Jada's mother.
Family and friends marked the one-year anniversary of her murder by gathering outside with hundreds of purple balloons, her favorite color.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
