Detroit firefighters battle 64 structure fires, 82 downed wires Wednesday

Severe winds cause fires around southeast Michigan

DETROIT – The Detroit Fire Department released responded to nearly 200 fire calls Wednesday as severe winds blew through southeast Michigan.

Firefighters said in a normal day, they battle eight structure fires. But on Wednesday, they responded to 64 structure fires, 82 downed wires and a total of 174 fire calls.

Detroit firefighters said they have reserve trucks that are kept loaded, and two of those trucks were used on Wednesday.

Firefighters said not all of the fires can be blamed on the severe winds, but the weather clearly played a major part in the department's activity.
