Detroit Kennel Club Dog Show in jeopardy

Club president says costs might cancel event, or force it to move

DETROITThe president of the Detroit Kennel Club says crushing costs may force the cancellation of its annual dog show at Cobo Center.

For half a century, the dog show has attracted more than 25,000 people and 3,000 dogs.

But club president Erik Bergishagen tells Local 4 there's a 50/50 chance the show won't go on in 2014.

"I know there's a lot of people who are going to be very disappointed," Bergishagen said. "But you have to be really realistic in this day and age."

To put on a show like this takes money and a lot of it; anywhere from $350,000 to $400,000.

"We pay the dog show superintendent, there's the electrical, commercial electricity for everyone coming in," Bergishagen said.

Judges have to be paid, dog acts, security, and renting Cobo carries a big price tag too, but this is where the show has been held for the past 50 years.

"Stick with us, and hopefully we will be able to put this all together and we will be able to continue what we are doing," Bergishagen said.

He says there are two options that are being considered: Try to get some big sponsors or find a new, cheaper place to hold the event.

He said a decision should be made within a week.
