Detroit man charged with kidnapping in case that prompted Amber Alert

Michael Hunter accused of taking 6-month-old girl from mother

DETROIT – A 21-year-old Detroit man was charged Friday after he was arrested earlier this week for allegedly kidnapping a 6-month-old girl, which prompted an Amber Alert.

Michael Hunter is facing a felony charge of kidnapping, child enticement, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.

An Amber Alert was issued early Wednesday morning for Tonya Smith after her mother told police Hunter had shown up to her home the night before and grabbed the infant out of her arms.

"I was holding her when she was snatched out of my arms. She was snatched out of my arms with just her T-shirt on,” Juanita Smith said. “He grabs her and takes off running down 7 Mile.”

Hunter is not the infant's father, but is an acquaintance of Juantia Smith.

After several hours, Hunter contacted Smith and arrangements were made for him to surrender the infant.

If convicted, Hunter could be sentenced to up to life in prison.
