Detroit mayor accepts retirement from police chief amid sex scandal

Subordinate officer says she had relationship with Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee

DETROIT - Detroit mayor's says police Chief Ralph Godbee has retired after an internal affairs officer revealed the two had been in a sexual relationship.

Mayor Dave Bing announced Monday morning that the 44-year-old Godbee submitted a letter of resignation, effective immediately, from the job he's held since 2010.

"I think this was the right decision by the chief and therefore I support him," Bing said. "It bothers me, hurts me a great deal that it has come to this."

Bing said he had met with Godbee Sunday and had a "long conversation" about the concerns.

"He did tell me that he had a relationship with Miss Robinson," Bing said. He also said Godbee was contrite, embarrassed and had apologized for letting the department and people of Detroit down.

"There is no doubt in my mind that we can look at this incident as an indictment across the entire 2,600 and plus police officers in the city. They are under a lot of stress and strain, I sympathize with them, I empathize with them," Bing said.

When asked about if he had ever talked with Godbee about his behavior within the department as it relates to women, Bing said, "We have had that conversation on more than one occasion because I had concerns based on the history. He had confided in me that he had changed his ways."

Chester Logan will now lead the department while the search for a permanent chief gets under way.

"The Board of Commissioners will do their search through an appropriate search firm and once they get a list of names of candidates for me to choose from, I will choose – make the decision and then go to City Council for their conclusion, for their approval," Bing said.

Bing placed him on a 30-day suspension last week pending an investigation into the claims by 37-year-old Angelica Robinson's attorney that she wanted the relationship to end and Godbee did not. David Robinson says his client posted a photo of herself on Twitter with a gun in her mouth after learning Godbee was at a weekend conference with another woman.

He says Godbee had other officers locate Angelica Robinson and put her under surveillance. She has been reassigned to other duties.

Godbee has not publicly commented on the claims.

But this is the second time claims of a relationship with an officer have surfaced during Godbee's reign.
