Detroit police: Girl abducted by mentally ill mother

Police say mentally ill mother without custody abducted 5-year-old daughter from school

Detroit police are asking for help in the search for a 5-year-old girl who, police say, has been abducted by her mentally ill mother.

Police say Zoie Jackson' mother, Carmela Jackson, does not have custody of the girl. However, the mother picked up Zoie about 3:30 p.m. Monday from a Detroit school in the 12600 block of Burt Road. The duo has not been seen since.

Zoie's father, who is a Detroit police officer, has full custody. He was in surgery Monday when the abduction happened.

Carmela Jackson, 37, has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia, bi-polar and post partum depression. Police believe she is taking the girl out of state toward Elkhart, Indiana.

The girl's grandmother, Katrina Appling, is worried. She is the one who was supposed to pick up Zoie.

"After I sat there (outside school) for a while and she didn't come out I went up to the door and the teacher said, 'Oh, Zoie's mother picked her up," said Appling.

It was a substitute teacher who let Zoie go with her mother. According to a court order, Carmela Jackson is only allowed to spend 1 hour a week with Zoie.

"Like any child would, she loves her mother and she loves her father. But she knows the reason she is not with her mother is because her mother is sick," said Appling.

Zoie is described as black, standing 4 feet tall and weighing about 62 pounds. She has shoulder-length hair and was last seen wearing a red shirt, black pants and black boots with fur around the top. She also was carrying a black and pink backpack.

Carmela is described as black, standing about 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

Her vehicle is described as a black 2002 Lexus Cross with Michigan plate CMR 0252.

Appling says Carmela has taken Zoie before.

"She resents the fact that my son has custody and she doesn't want him to have custody. She wants to have custody," said the grandmother.

Anyone with information on the mother and daughter's whereabouts is asked to contact Detroit police at 313-237-2579.
