Detroit police searching for man who opened fire on officers

Officers ambushed while conducting stolen car surveillance

DETROIT – Undercover Detroit police officers were targeted and forced to return fire Wednesday night while conducting stolen car surveillance near McClellan Avenue and St. Paul Street.

The police task force from the 9th Precinct were looking for stolen cars and doing surveillance while parked in car in 7th Precinct. That's when a car pulled up and a man exited the vehicle and opened fire on the officers.

Officials say the officers returned fire on the gunman who then fled the scene.

It's unclear if the gunman was injured and police are said to have been checking local hospitals for anyone coming in with gunshot wounds.

No officers were injured.
