DETROIT - A 16-year-old Detroit girl will be tried as a juvenile in connection with the death of her newborn infant, according to authorities.

Emergency responders were dispatched Feb. 21 to the 9100 block of Agnes Street in Detroit at about 11:30 p.m. in response to a call regarding a health condition, according to officials. The 16-year-old was then taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Earlier that day, the teenager gave birth to an infant on a toilet in an apartment on Agnes Street. According to officials, she then allegedly stabbed the infant multiple times, then wrapped it in a towel before hiding it in a closet in her room.

Detroit police officers located the dead infant in the closet the next day.

The teen has been charged as a juvenile with second-degree murder. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. at the Juvenile Detention Center in Detroit.
