Detroit Tigers help local school revamp baseball, softball programs

Robichaud High School wins Grand Slam event

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – When you take one look at the ball diamond at Robichaud High School in Dearborn Heights, you could say it isn't exactly baseball ready. In fact, it hasn't been for years.

"It's been over 20 years since we've been able to use our field," said athletic director Vernon Crump. "We've have drainage issues among other problems but we are ready to bring baseball back to Robichaud."

The grass is non-existent, the stands not fit for fans, old, rundown you name it. But Thursday, Comerica Bank and the Detroit Tigers changed all of that.

Robichaud High School was the winner of the Grand Slam Grant. Comerica Bank surprised the students and faculty with a $10,000 check, going directly towards their baseball and softball programs.

"I can't even walk on the field without sinking in," said senior and second baseman Dewey Mitchell. "I am so excited, ready to play on it."

The teams will also be invited to Comerica Park to be recognized on the field prior to the April 5 opening weekend game against the Baltimore Orioles. The Robichaud Bulldogs were hand-picked for this grant out of dozens of schools by the Detroit Tigers. The students even received a personal congratulations video message from Detroit Tigers outfielder Rajai Davis.

"I was so surprised," said junior softball player Javonna Williams. "It means so much to be able to (play) at home."

"Our school has so much pride and the kids are going to be so excited for this change," Crump said.
