Driver crashes car into Birmingham home

Troy man in critical condition after crashing car into home while fleeing police

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – A 32-year-old man from Troy is in critical condition after crashing a car into a Birmingham home while attempting to flee from police.

Saturday shortly after 3:00 a.m., Beverly Hills Public Safety officers attempted to pullover the driver after he almost collided with a police vehicle at 13 Mile and Southfield.

The driver then fled from the officer through a residential neighborhood. He continued to evade police and crossed into Birmingham at 14 Mile and Pierce.

The driver nearly missed, crashing into a Birmingham Police vehicle near the intersection. He continued northbound on Pierce with Birmingham officers joining in on the chase.

A female passenger in the car stuck her arms out the window and waved in what officers believed was a plea for help. The driver sped off and when he came to a dead end, the man continued driving through the intersection. His car left the road and drove straight into a home on Southfield Road.

The man was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered critical injuries. The passenger, a 23-year-old woman from Williamsburg, was wearing a seat belt and suffered only minor injuries.

Both were transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital. The woman was released in the morning. The driver is listed in critical condition and remains at Beaumont.

The woman told police she had just met the driver at a party. He offered to drive her to her friend's house.

She says that after police tried to stop the vehicle, she pleaded with the man to stop the car.

Alcohol and narcotics are believed to be involved in the crash. Police also found a loaded handgun in the vehicle next to the driver's seat.

There was extensive damage to the home.

The resident of the house was sleeping in another part of the home at the time of the crash and was not injured.
