Driver of speeding vehicle dies after striking tree, home on Detroit's west side

Witnesses recall horrific scene

DETROIT – A man has died after his speeding vehicle struck a tree and then a house on Detroit’s west side, police said.

The incident happened near Dexter and Grand Boulevard.

Witnesses said the driver was speeding down Dexter and lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle jumped a curb, hit a tree, and landed in the yard of a home.

Witnesses said the driver hit the tree first and then the home, causing the driver to be ejected from the vehicle.
The driver died instantly, according to police. He was the only person inside the vehicle.

The speed that the driver was going at was so high, he took out a 30 mph speed limit sign which was later found in a tree.

"He was going at least over 100 mph he was going race car track speed limit," Malysia Coleman said. "I've never seen anything like this in my life."

Authorities are unsure if alcohol or drugs played a part in the crash.
