Driver of stolen bus identifies himself as 'God' to police after chain-reaction crash in Pontiac

Police say man walked away from scene after causing crash in school bus

PONTIAC, Mich. – A 36-year-old man from Pontiac identified himself to police as "God" after officials said he caused a chain-reaction crash while driving a stolen school bus.

Police said they responded  at 9:53 p.m. Saturday to the area of Orchard Lake Road and Berwick Street after reports of a crash involving a school bus.

Witnesses at the scene said the bus driver was walking away. An officer from the Sylvan Lake Police Department found the man, who appeared to be trying to evade the officer, police said.

The bus driver was taken into custody and identified himself to the officer as "God," police said.

Deputies said there was significant damage to the school bus and two other vehicles that had been involved in the crash. Two additional vehicles had minor damage.

Witnesses told police the school bus was heading west on Orchard Lake Road when it crossed the center line and hit a vehicle traveling east. They said the impact set off a chain reaction.

Investigators discovered the school bus had been stolen from the Webber Academy on Woodward Avenue in Pontiac.

One of the drivers that had been struck by the bus was taken by Star EMS to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital for medical treatment. The driver is expected to recover.

The other drivers involved in the crash declined medical treatment.

Police said the school bus driver was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and additional misdemeanor charges.

He is being held at the Oakland County Jail as the investigation continues. Detectives from the Auto Theft Unit will take over the investigation.
