Driver of car registered to Detroit Mayor Duggan charged with OWI in northern Michigan

22-year-old man charged with OWI, police say

BENZONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 22-year-old man was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated after being pulled over Aug. 28 in Benzonia Township in a car registered to Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, according to officials.

The 22-year-old driver, who is friends with Duggan's son, Patrick, was pulled over on U.S. 31 near River Street in Benzie County, Michigan. Officials said there were three other people in the car who are all around the same age as the driver, including Patrick, 23.

Patrick was not arrested or charged in the incident. Mike Duggan was in Detroit at the time of the incident.

Mike Duggan's spokesperson released the following statement:

The Mayor's 23-year-old son was a passenger in a family vehicle at the time it was pulled over last weekend in Benzie County. This vehicle, which has been in the family since 2010, is registered under the Mayor's name but is not one he personally uses.

A friend of the Mayor's son was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident. The Mayor's son was never accused of any wrongdoing and isn't even mentioned by name in the police report.

At the time of this incident, Mayor Duggan was in Detroit attending several of the events associated with the Hydrofest."

The driver was arrested and charged, but has not yet been arraigned on the charges. He will not be named until he is arraigned, which is expected to be Sept. 8. 

Benzonia Township is about 30 miles southwest of Traverse City.
