E-reader scammer caught in secret sting

DETROIT - He has a face you can trust, but don't believe him. What he's selling is stolen.

But now this local con man has been caught in a secret sting operation.

According to court documents obtained by the Local 4 Defenders, Deantai Anotnio Box was a smooth operator who stole identities to steal desirable high tech toys.

Box bought electronics with counterfeit checks after taking strangers' identities and slapping them on bogus checks. He then went online to sites like eBay, where he resold items like Nook e-readers to unsuspecting customers.

Barnes and Noble, who carries Nooks, said they got complaints of identity theft from their customers. Box is seen on security video several times buying more than $35,000 in e-readers in other people's names.

Federal investigators were able to track down the customers who bought the stolen e-readers - -and all fingers pointed to who they had bought them from.

Investigators set up a sting, winning a bid for one of Box's eBay Nook and arranged a meeting in person. Box was busted when investigators confronted him.

He admitted to the scheme and pleaded guilty.
