Elderly man questioned in fatal shooting in Van Buren Township

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – An elderly man is being questioned in the shooting death of a 44-year-old man in Van Buren Township Wednesday night.

Police said Eric Williams was killed in the 4900 block of Michigan Avenue.

His stepdaughter, Megan Delaney, told Local 4 Williams treated her like his own child.

"He was a real nice guy. He did anything for anybody. He took care of his grandkids. I just miss him," she said.

Eddie Short was at work at a nearby convenience store when he heard the gunshot.

"I was like, 'Oh my God'. I was like, 'This can't be real.' We never had nothing like this ever happen out here. This is like a quiet neighborhood," Short said.

Police have a 73-year-old man in custody.

Neighbors say he lives in a recreational vehicle in the back yard of a house.

"The guy is very nice. He talks to everybody. He doesn't bug nobody," said Lisa Uhlian, an acquaintance of the elderly man.

Police are looking into past contact between the two men.

Neighbors say the men recently had a fight.

Delaney said she wants justice.

"Whatever happened, I just want the truth to come out. I want the person who did it to pay. That's all I want," she said.

Investigators said they're waiting for the autopsy to be done before they turn the case over to the prosecutor's office, which will determine charges.
