Family escapes house fire possibly caused by lightning strike in West Bloomfield

Firefighters believe lightning strike caused fire in attic

WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A West Bloomfield Township family escaped their burning home after it was struck by lightning during Friday evening's severe weather in Southeast Michigan, firefighters said.

Police said the family was inside the home before 6 p.m. when they heard a loud bang, smelled smoke in the house, called 911 and got out. When firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from the attic and the whole family was outside the home.

The home is in the 6000 block of Ravines Circle, near Haggerty and Maple roads.

West Bloomfield Township Fire Marshal Bryon Turnquist said the house was damaged, but it's not a total loss. He said firefighters did a good job containing the fire and minimizing the damage.

The fire started in the attic, Turnquist said. Officials believe it was caused by a lightning strike, but it remains under investigation.

There are no signs of anything suspicious, officials said.
