PONTIAC, Mich. - A man is dead and 6 others hurt, including his two children, after a gunman opened fire in a crowd watching fireworks in Pontiac on Thursday.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said several hundred people were gathered around the Perry Palace party store when some type of fight broke out and a man began firing.

A 33-year-old man was hit in the head and killed. His 6-year-old son also suffered a gunshot wound to his head -- but is expected to live. He's being treated at Children's Hospital in Detroit.

His 12-year-old sister was also hurt in the arm, but, deputies said, it appears to be from something else and not a gunshot wound.

Others hurt:

  • Two 22-year-old women were shot in their legs
  • 28-year-old man shot in the hip and forearm
  • 23-year-old man shot in the leg

The alleged gunman, a 35-year-old Pontiac man, was identified by several witnesses and arrested early Friday morning.

More information on the suspect will be released pending charges.
