FBI Investigating Firebombing At Women's Center

Reward Offered For Information On Whoever Damaged Detroit Health Center

DETROIT - The FBI is asking for the public's help in finding out who threw what appears to be a Molotov cocktail at a women's center in Detroit in July.

The FBI said a window was cracked and a portion of the building scorched at the Summit Women's Center on West McNicols Road sometime after 1:30 p.m. on July 16.

Ernest, a man assigned to help with security at the center, said he found the damage when he arrived for his shift.

"It was an orange juice bottle. It had been ignited," he said. "They cut a hole in the fence. You can see the hole in the fence they cut."

The administrator of the center asked not to be identified, but called the incident frightening.

"We were unsettled about it," she said. "But we kept working because we're here to serve women."

She said protesters appear every weekend and has even a personal protection order against one in particular.

"These protesters assume that every woman that walks through these doors are coming here for an abortion," the administrator said. "That's not true. Women walk through these doors for a lot of services every day."

The FBI said the damage to the building may constitute a violation of the FACE Act, a Civil Rights violation. The 1994 Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act makes it a federal crime to injure, intimidate or interfere with those seeking to obtain or provide reproductive health care services.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAKUP or the FBI Detroit Office at 313- 965-2323.

The FBI Detroit Office is offering a $1,000.00 Reward for any information leading to the identification and arrest of those involved.
