Ferndale police: Man claims to have bomb, robs bank on Woodward Avenue

FERNDALE, Mich. – Ferndale police said a man claiming to have a bomb robbed a bank on Woodward Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

The man entered the Charter One branch at 23001 Woodward Ave. and said he was interested in opening a bank account, police said. Instead, he showed a device he claimed was a bomb and demanded money.

Police said the man was given an undisclosed amount of money and fled on foot.

Surveillance pictures of the man in the bank have been released.

Police describe the man as black, 55 to 60 years old, thin build, 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall with a goatee and long messy hair. He was last seen wearing a light colored Pittsburgh Steelers baseball cap, white T-shirt, tan vest, gray jeans and brown Timberland boots.

Ferndale Police and the FBI are investigating. Anybody with information is asked to call Ferndale police 248-541-3650 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP to leave an anonymous tip and receive up to a $1000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
