PONTIAC, Mich. - A state review team has determined that Pontiac Public Schools is in a financial emergency -- a step in a process that could lead to the appointment of an emergency manager for the district.
The six-member financial review team on Friday submitted its report to Gov. Rick Snyder, who has 10 days to make his own determination.
The team began examining the district's finances on July 3 and held several meetings with administrators, union representatives and others. A public meeting also was held.
Pontiac Schools' general fund budget deficit increased from $24.5 million to $37.7 million between 2011 and 2012. Unpaid bills to vendors totaled about $33 million as of the end of June.
Public school districts in Detroit and Highland Park currently have emergency managers.
