FLINT, Mich. - An 18-year-old Flint man is charged with criminal sexual conduct after, police say, he attacked and sexually assaulted an 87-year-old woman at her home Oct. 15 on the city's southwest side.

Denzel Berry is accused of attacking the woman when she returned from the grocery store and was carrying her groceries through the back door to her home. He attacked the woman from behind, police say.

He knocked her to the ground, sexually assaulted her, stole money from her purse and took jewelry from inside the home before fleeing.

The woman called her neighbor who went to the home and called the woman's daughter who then called 911.

Evidence in the case led authorities to charge Berry, police said.

"This is one of the most heinous crimes I have had to review as prosecutor," said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. "We will do all we can to see that justice is served in this case and that Denzel Berry is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law based on the evidence against him."

Berry is scheduled to be arraigned on charges including criminal sexual conduct first degree, home invasion first degree, unarmed robbery and assault to do great bodily harm less than murder.
