For many, Black Friday shopping starts early

Shopping centers in Novi appeared busy Thursday, despite holiday

NOVI, Mich. – Holiday shoppers started lining up outside Toys "R" Us in Novi hours before doors opened on Thanksgiving.

“The lady in front of us -- we saw her last year,” shopper Josh Chin said. “It was kind of funny.”

For many, Black Friday shopping started early.

And with all the tempting deals online, stores seemed eager to find unique ways to bring people inside the doors.

“There’s a couple exclusive, only-in-store items, so that’s why I’m here,” shopper Kim Burgess said.

Americans are expected to head out or go online to find deep discounts this holiday weekend.

“We all chat about what we are getting,” Burgess said. “I think people are pretty friendly, overall.”

Across the street Thursday, it was packed at Twelve Oaks mall.

“Usually at night, you won’t see so many shoppers,” shopper Poonam Yadav said. “I love this feeling. It’s amazing (and) festive. Everyone’s shopping or out.”

“The best deals are today,” shopper Latisha Rouse said. “Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been with my family, but we do this every year.”

Sometimes it pays off to start working on that Christmas list a little early.

“I think we’re done,” Chin said. “This is it. I think we got everything the kids asked for.”
