Long-term forecast calls for below-average temps in March

By Paul Gross - Meteorologist

DETROIT - It will be cloudy with a few breaks Tuesday night and a possible flurry or very light snow shower. Lows will be in the low teens.

It will be mostly cloudy on Wednesday (a better chance for some breaks of sun as the afternoon progresses). There's also a chance for some very light snow south of Detroit, especially toward the state line. Highs around 23.

Becoming partly cloudy Wednesday night. Lows near 5 in the heart of the metro area, but those of you north of I-69 could drop well below zero if your clouds clear out early enough.

Partly cloudy to mostly sunny on Thursday. Highs in the mid 20s. Mostly clear Thursday night, with lows in the low teens.

Mostly sunny skies Friday morning become mostly cloudy by afternoon. Highs in the mid to upper 30s. Mostly cloudy with an insignificant light snow shower possible Friday night as a cold front swings through. Lows near 20.

Partly cloudy through the weekend, with highs generally around 30 or into the low 30s.

Long-term forecast

And now, a quick word about the long-term forecast: Below average temperatures are expected to persist overall through the month of March. Now, keep in mind that average highs rise through the 40s in March, so below average doesn't necessarily mean constant teens and 20s, it could be 30s on many days.

BUT, this means that storms which come this way are still capable of giving us snow. In fact, my super long range computer models (which shouldn't be trusted for specific day-to-day weather two weeks in advance) do suggest that we'll have some of these storms to keep an eye on, so stay tuned.

Remember that we're only 9.8 inches shy of breaking the record for all-time snowiest winter in Detroit!
