Forecast: Get ready for some 80s in metro Detroit

Also get ready for stormy Friday

By Paul Gross - Meteorologist

DETROIT - There will be some spotty showers and thunderstorms overnight and, as the night wears on, the better chances will be across the farther northern part of our area (particularly the Thumb).

Lows in the mid 50s. East to southeast wind at 4 to 8 miles per hour.

A warm front moving northward across the area could trigger a few scattered morning showers across the Thumb, but those will move out and all of us will enjoy a warm, balmy afternoon with high near or even a couple of degrees above 80!

Of course, you folks near Lake Huron always get the early spring caveat: You'll be much cooler than the rest of us, with temps potentially holding in the mid to upper 60s at the shoreline, rising into the 70s as you head farther inland. Those of you south of the warm front to start the day will have south wind all day long, while those of you north of the warm front will start with east or southeast wind and see that shift to the south once the warm front passes by.

Partly cloudy and mild Thursday night, with lows in the low 60s.

Friday forecast:

Friday may start dry, but afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms should develop. A strong storm cannot be ruled out. Highs in the low 70s. Showers and storms continue into at least part of Friday night, with lows in the mid 50s.

Weekend forecast:

Partly cloudy on Saturday (perhaps even becoming mostly sunny for part of the day), with highs in the mid 60s. Partly cloudy Saturday night, with lows in the upper 40s to near 50.

Though still not in complete agreement, my computer models are starting to agree on at least a chance of Mother's Day showers. Obviously, the devil is in the details, and details are tough to come by when the models don't agree.

This is an important day for a lot of us, so I'll keep diligent watch on the developing pattern, and update you as soon as I get more confident with the forecast. At least it should be reasonably mild, with highs in the upper 60s to near 70.
