Fraser sinkhole: Officials discuss impact of ongoing litigation, provide overall update

FRASER, Mich. – Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel held a news conference Thursday to discuss the Fraser sinkhole and the impact of ongoing litigation.

The city of Sterling Heights is suing the Macomb Interceptor Drain Drainage District (MIDD) claiming it shouldn’t have to kick in $22 million to fix the problem. The city says the sinkhole in Fraser is MIDD’s fault because it is in charg of fixing the sewer and did not properly maintain the sewer line.

Candice Miller said the lawsuit is hurting the interest rate of the bonds the county is planning to sell.

Miller and Hackel also provided an overall update on the status of the construction project.

Work on the sewer collapse along 15 Mile Road between Hayes and Utica roads has been ongoing since Dec. 24, 2016. The collapse created a sinkhole beneath the neighborhood.

Crews are working around the clock to fix the sewer line, only taking breaks in the middle of the night. Watch the work live here.
