Girl, 3, killed in suspected drunken driving crash in Shelby Township

Driver also killed when her car collided with family in minivan near Hayes Road

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A 3-year-old girl died Monday in what Shelby Township police say appears to be a drunk driving crash.

Police said the 3-year-old was in a van with her parents and two other siblings when they were hit on Hayes Road by a car that was going westbound on 23 Mile Road.

The driver that hit the family, a Sterling Heights woman in her 40s, also died. Police say she may have been drinking and ran a red light.

Police said the woman who died was driving an Oldsmobile and was the only person in that car at the time of the crash.

The girl's parents and two siblings were sent to the hospital.

Shelby Township Police Chief Roland Woelkers told Local 4 the two other children and their father were treated and released from the hospital. The mother of the three children remains hospitalized.

Police are not releasing the names of the driver and 3-year-old victim until all family has been notified of their passing.

The intersection was closed for several hours but is now back open.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Shelby Township Police Department at 586-731-2121.

Witness says he tried to save little girl

Doug Goad owns The Corner Clock Restaurant at 23 Mile and Hayes.

Doug saw the crash, heard the crash and through tears told Local 4 how he tried to save the little girl.

"I ran over to the accident, I saw the father get out of the car and he actually handed his young daughter through the window to a woman," said Goad. "This woman happened to be a nurse, she was checking for a pulse while I was giving her mouth to mouth, she even came back a few times."

Goad said he did everything he could and is deeply saddened to know the girl didn't make it.

"My heart goes out to this family, especially to the father. Here he was, running around wife trapped in front, kids trapped in the back, I don't know how he held it together," Goad said. "When kids are involved…as a dad…it just changes everything."
